EU trademark suggests Death Note will soon become a game

Highlights

  • Death Note received two new trademarks in the EU, leading many to believe that one of them was related to a video game.
  • Given the state of anime video games, fans were immediately dissatisfied and joked that it would be an arena fighter.
  • It is important to note that the trademark could refer to Netflix’s planned live-action series.

There’s no shortage of anime and manga that would make for great video games. For example, Berserk would be a killer game from FromSoftware, and Mobile Suit Gundam would feel right at home in the Titanfall universe. However, most anime video games are fighting games, specifically 3D arena battles. They’re not bad per se, but they’re a dime a dozen, and once you’ve played one, you’ve experienced everything there is to know.

Of course, every now and then there’s an anime video game that tries to break the mold. One Piece Odyssey, for example, was a turn-based RPG, while Digimon Survive was part visual novel, part tactics game. Now it looks like the popular anime and manga series Death Note is entering the anime video game world. What that game will look like remains to be seen, but sarcastic fans already have a few ideas, and they’re not happy.

New EU trademark suggests a Death Note game could be released

As first spotted by a user on eXputer, Shueisha Inc., the Japanese publisher behind Weekly Shōnen Jump and other manga magazines, has filed two new trademarks related to Death Note in the EU. The first trademark is simply titled “Death Note,” while the second stands for something called “Death Note Killer Within.” Both filed trademarks have goods and service names, making them similar to other trademarked anime games.

It’s important to note, however, that these trademarks could refer to Netflix’s planned live-action series. However, it also wouldn’t be the first Death Note game. That’s because three separate Nintendo DS titles have been released. Additionally, characters from Death Note have appeared in Jump crossover games, including prominent roles in 2019’s Jump Force.

Sand Land the anime is simply Sand Land the game, but much better

Either way, fans were quick to poke fun at the potential of a Death Note game, especially given the landscape of anime video games as a whole. One user wrote on Reddit, “Somehow it’s going to be an anime arena fighter.” This comment was followed by a gameplay suggestion, with one user chiming in, “Who can write down the other person’s name the fastest?”

Elsewhere, one user immediately requested a potato chip-based DLC. This is a nod to the infamous potato chip scene from Death Note that has since become a major meme. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out:

Memes aside, it will be interesting to see if the Death Note game becomes a reality and how it will play. That’s because Death Note is a rare title that could work as a pure visual novel, something like Ace Attorney, or even a dreaded fighting game, as hard as that is to believe. Long live the potato chip DLC.
