T20 World Cup 2024 – England vs USA – Hattrick hero Chris Jordan is happy about his dream homecoming

Perhaps because he has been around longer, Chris Jordan is not remembered as an English cricketer with Bajan roots like Jofra Archer. It was at Kensington Oval that Jordan first saw a cricket match, between the West Indies and England, and fell in love with the game. He vaguely remembers watching it from the old press box. Perhaps he means the grandstand and not the actual press box.
It’s nothing unusual to have created a special memory here, scoring a hat-trick to end the USA innings early, when five wickets were lost for no runs before England eventually won the Super Eight match by ten wickets to book a place in the semi-finals. It is of course special to have done this ‘at home’; the crowd made it even more special for Jordan as he had never seen so many of his family members watch him play. It is one of his best days in an England shirt.

“Yeah, it’s a good day,” Jordan said. “I think it’s because my family don’t often get the chance to travel around the world and watch me play international cricket, so to do it in front of them is definitely up there. And then to do it at a World Cup, in a game where we’re trying to qualify, that’s definitely up there. That’s right up there on the list.”

Who was there? “Yeah, everybody. The list goes on. My mum, my dad, my sister, my brother-in-law, my nephew. My nephew is the one because he called me this morning and said, ‘If you play, make sure you take three wickets today.’ And yeah, so I looked up and he jumped up because maybe one day he could be out there trying to do the same thing. So yeah, you try to be a role model and stuff. So yeah, it was a nice day.”

It was fitting, then, that England called Jordan in for a home match alongside Archer. After the loss to Australia, Jordan missed the match against Oman but was recalled for the rain-shortened decisive match against Namibia. He then missed matches against the West Indies and South Africa. It can be challenging for a player to be unsure of his place in the starting XI, but Jordan was undeterred.

“Not too much of a challenge because I’ve played a lot of cricket now and I think the communication has been really good from the hierarchy as well,” he said. “I try to control the things that I can control – because even when I’m not playing, I try to be there for the guys and help them with their planning and make sure the guys go into the game well motivated as well.

“So we don’t really have much time to think about whether we’re in or not. I can only keep training hard and keep preparing because I’m going to play every game anyway, no matter what the score is on the day. So, yeah, that’s not a big problem for me.”
