NEW YORK – The Yankees’ dry spell continues.

This time they got a solid performance from Nestor Cortes, but ultimately wasted it with an offense that could do no harm to the Braves and resulted in a 3-1 loss on Sunday in front of 46,683 spectators at Yankee Stadium.

With this loss, the Yankees have lost three series in a row and have lost seven of their last ten games, or four of five.

The club announced earlier in the day that batter Giancarlo Stanton would be placed on the 10-day injured list due to a hamstring strain sustained in Saturday’s win.

Cortes got off to a good start Sunday morning, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced before Jarred Kelenic hit a two-out solo home run in the third inning. Cortes allowed two more runs in the fifth inning, but the left-hander limited the Braves enough after that to get through the seventh inning before manager Aaron Boone brought in Tommy Kahnle.

On offense, the Yankees couldn’t do much against Braves starter Max Fried, who allowed six hits in six innings.

Trent Grisham hit a single to start the sixth inning before Anthony Volpe caught him with a double, the only damage the Yankees did to Fried.

Next up is the showdown against the Mets

After a day off on Monday, the Yankees will play a two-game series against the Mets at Citi Field, the first edition of the Subway Series this season (the Yankees will host the Mets for a two-game series in July).

The Mets are playing better now and are becoming a major factor in the National League wild-card race after a slow start to the season – they entered Sunday having won eight of their last 10 games – and the Subway Series is giving them extra momentum.

And the Yankees will have their star player, Gerrit Cole, on the mound for Tuesday’s game – it will be his second start since being reinstated in the rotation after spending the first few months of the season on the injured list.

“It’s New York City, the biggest, greatest city in the world,” Aaron Boone said. “Two great franchises. I talk about it a lot, but over the course of 162 games, there’s a little bit of a different kind of excitement and excitement that comes with it and a break from the normal monotony of the season. I think it’s exciting for the players on both teams, certainly for the fan base and certainly for the city. Obviously the Mets are starting to play good baseball here, so I think it’s something we always look forward to.”

And it will be strange for Boone to face his former bench coach Carlos Mendoza, who is in his first season as manager of the Mets.

“There are always some subtleties and Mendy has been such an important part of his organization for so long and now he’s helping to lead that organization. It’s going to be a little bit weird,” Boone said. “We did that a little bit in spring training when we saw him. Now those count. It’s certainly going to be fun to watch him.”

But more than anything, the Yankees need to start winning games again.

The month of June was anything but kind to Boone’s club, which nevertheless managed to maintain its lead in the American League East with the best record in the Major Leagues.
