Tommy Paul is the new US No. 1 after winning his first grass court title at the Queen’s Club on Sunday, heading to Wimbledon as the American leader.
The 27-year-old beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 7-6 in 88 minutes to win his third tour-level title. He said: “This is the perfect path to Wimbledon. Thank you to everyone who came and watched.”
Paul became the first American player to win on the prestigious London turf since Sam Querrey in 2010, joining the likes of Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors and Andy Roddick who have triumphed here.
He added: “When you hear the names (of the previous winners) in the dressing room, it’s incredible. It was my goal to put my name next to them. Thank you to all my team.”
In two of the last three years, the winner of the Cinch Championships made it to the final of Wimbledon: Matteo Berrettini and Carlos Alcaraz did so in 2021 and 2023 respectively, with the latter winning the Grand Slam.
While the Italian Musetti was unable to get into this match in the scorching heat of West London, his compatriot and world number one Jannik Sinner heads to SW19 in top form after his victory in Halle.
The 22-year-old Sinner defeated Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 7:6(8), 7:6(2) to win the title. After Roger Federer, he was only the second man to win there while also holding the top spot in the men’s singles rankings.
