Brother kills teenage sister and fakes suicide | News from Pune

Police have arrested an 18-year-old youth for allegedly murdering his underage sister and faking her death as a suicide. Police investigations have revealed that the accused strangled his 16-year-old sister after she tried to attack him with a knife during an argument.

According to police, the deceased Safiya Suleman Ansari (16) lives in Vaiduvadi, Hadapsar. Her elder brother Sharikh has been arrested. According to police, he is pursuing a diploma in tourism after completing his studies up to high school graduation.

Safiya was a student at a local school, police said. The incident occurred on June 17 at around 2.30 a.m.

On the morning of June 17, Sharikh reported his sister’s death to the police as a suicide. The police subsequently registered the death pending the completion of the investigation into the cause of death.

Inspector Mangal Modhave, the officer investigating the case, said: “Though the death was reported to us as suicide by hanging, the autopsy suggested that she had been strangled. Further investigation suggested that the brother had murdered his sister. He was subsequently arrested.”

Another official said: “Investigations indicate that the two had been quarreling for some time. On the night of June 16-17, when no family members were at home, the siblings got into an argument. It started with an argument over who would sleep in a particular bed. The sister tried to attack the brother with a kitchen knife, after which the brother suspectedly strangled her.”

Police filed a murder complaint against Sharikh on Saturday and arrested him. He was remanded in custody.
