Lisbon transport workers call for new strike

The information was provided by the Portuguese Road and Urban Transport Workers’ Union (STRUP), affiliated to the Federation of Transport and Communications Trade Unions (FECTRANS).

In a statement, STRUP states that after a general plenary session held at Praça do Município in Lisbon, workers considered it “inadmissible that the Board of Directors of Carris (CA) continues without responding to the constant demands” of the previous plenary session, despite the “company’s net profit of 9.5 million euros” assumed by the company in its report and balance sheet for 2023.

The workers’ demands include a salary increase of 100 euros, an increase in the food allowance of 15 euros per day, an increase to 35 hours per week including travel time to and from the handover points, and a travel ticket for the greater Lisbon area.

According to STRUP, these demands are “essential not only to improve the living conditions of workers, but also to create the conditions for retaining the workers necessary for public service and creating attractive conditions for new recruits”.

In this way, the workers have decided to continue the ongoing struggle process with a 24-hour strike on July 11, “if there continues to be no positive response to the demands regarding financial matters and the willingness to continue the negotiation process”.
