Strike Two – Dodgers unveil second City Connect uniforms

Strike Two – Dodgers unveil second City Connect uniforms

Good Sunday morning everyone! Yes, the Dodgers pulled off a big win last night, so their dreams came true in their new City Connect jerseys. And they beat at least one of my least favorite jerseys in the process!

__________

__________

It’s always nice to see the Anaheim Red Devils… er, I mean, the “Los Angeles” Angels take it easy in those stealth red jerseys. So at least the Dodgers didn’t have the worst uniform on the field. Their second attempt at a CC uniform was still a swing and a foul ball, though. Better than getting a strike like the first.

As you may have noticed in the main photo, starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow was wearing some funky socks. One of the things I liked about this uniform was the sprinkles on them. The dark socks have the same sprinkles on them.

__________

__________

They also had the LAD mashup logo on the back of the legs.

__________

__________

So from the waist down I’m a fan. But these numbers…

__________

__________

I don’t mind the name under the number (I was a Kansas City Kings fan after all), but WHY cut the numbers off the bottom? Whoever came up with this idea gets the Broken Pencil Award because it’s pointless. Such a shame because I love this number font and want to see it in its entirety. At least it didn’t stand out on Shohei Ohtani.

__________

__________

The 0 in front of the single-digit numbers doesn’t bother me either. Just as pointless, but more strange than annoying. Another thing bothered me, which you will see below when we welcome a surprise guest. Reader Scott Thompson sent me an email last night with some pictures and said:

I’m constantly struck by the yellow tint that’s so obvious on television.

__________

__________

I’m not sure what they look like in reality, but they look like an old white undershirt with sweat stains in the armpits.

__________

__________

Is this due to the “off-white” color of the jerseys? It seems to be most noticeable around the buttons. Every player has the same problem. It’s driving me crazy.

Thanks, Scott! Yes, I’ve had some old shirts that were yellowed like that. Old ones…not brand new like these jerseys. Did anyone else see that last night? And what drives *me* crazy is the “LOS AINGELES” on Tyler Glasnow’s jersey. Respect the placket, Nike!

It’s time to do better. You came so close with this one that with full numbering and a solid button placket I could have said, “I’d wear that.”

Lots of voices, not many fans

__________

When Phil covered LA’s first City Connects performance, the reaction was overwhelmingly negative. Out of 106 comments, the positive ones were in the single digits and only one read:

__________

__________

So he must be really happy this morning! Most people didn’t like the paint splatter/funfetti look of the uniforms. This was one of the bright spots (pun not intended) for me and this reader:

__________

__________

What really aroused readers’ ire, understandably, were the cut-off numbers.

__________

__________

This is where I came up with the idea for Strike Two for today’s headline. Maybe it will work the third time?

__________

__________

There was a lot of “I tolerate them” and “They’re nice but…” in the comments, so it wasn’t all completely negative. And I don’t know if Kary is left-handed, but his compliment certainly was!

__________

__________

Finally, I have to agree with Susan… this was the winner:

__________

__________

Where were you on April 29, 2017?

Do you know what you were doing 2,611 days ago? The Detroit Mechanix know. That was the last time they won a game of Ultimate Frisbee until last night!

Wow, seven years and 81 games. That’s a lot of futility, so congratulations to them. Here’s a close-up of the winning jersey.

__________

__________

Unfortunately, their historic win came at the expense of “my” Pittsburgh Thunderbirds. I only recently learned about them and even attended the home opener with my longtime UW reader and longtime friend Doug Keklak. Here’s what the T-Birds wore in last night’s loss.

__________

__________

The home version of this jersey was the design I chose for my fourth and final UW membership card.

__________

__________

Anyway, congratulations again, Detroit. Hopefully you didn’t ruin Pittsburgh’s playoff chances!

Today there is a colorful walk-off field goal

There was a very special color palette in Toronto last night as the Elks and the Argonauts competed in some very nice uniforms.

__________

__________

Both Wade Heidt and I are in favor of Edmonton traveling with the new green pants. I’m still not used to the Argos with the light blue helmets.

__________

__________

But I can handle it. And I can definitely handle the most exciting play in football, the walk-off field goal!

With that, I’ll say goodbye until next weekend. Take care!
