MNM party leader and famous South Korean actor Kamal Hassan describes the Huchen tragedy as “people’s guilt”

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party leader and well-known south Indian actor Kamal Hassan on Sunday said that the Tamil Nadu Hooch tragedy was the fault of the people.
After meeting with the victims of the tragedy, he stressed that alcohol should only be consumed occasionally and that the government must set up psychiatric centers.

He said: “…These victims must understand that they have crossed their limits and been careless. They must be careful. They must take care of their health. My request to the government would be to set up mental health centres to counsel them… Drinking should only be done occasionally and in social settings, if at all. But they must understand that crossing the limits in any form, be it sugar or anything else, is bad…”

What happened in the Hunny tragedy?

It is a common sight to see men in Karunapuram, Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, returning home heavily drunk. But when they started drinking alcohol daily last Tuesday, little did the men know that an illegal liquor would cost them their lives. The alcohol cost 54 people their lives and 100 were hospitalized.

So far, 5 people have been arrested, including 48-year-old Govindaraj alias Kannukutti, who allegedly sold the illegal drink to the victims. For over 20 years, Govindaraj has been selling a distilled alcoholic drink that is well known in the area.

Chinnadurai is the key name in the supply chain and Mathesh, who the police say is the mastermind behind the procurement of Mathanol. His wife and brother have also been arrested. And the twist is that Govindraj himself never drank.

BJP questions INDIA bloc

BJP MP Sambit Patra has not heard a single speech from Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi on the liquor tragedy and questions their silence.

Patra said, “More than 56 people have died and many of them are in critical condition, still around 200 people are hospitalized. This is such an important issue and I am surprised that Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, DMK and all members of INDIA alliance are silent on this issue.”

Among the 54 dead, 32 were from the SC. Patra added that more than 32 Dalits were killed in the country and that he would call it murder and not death.

Death toll rises

– So far, a total of 216 patients have been admitted to four hospitals in Tamil Nadu.

– Most of the deaths occurred at Kallakurichi Medical College, where 31 people died and 108 are still alive

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a judicial inquiry headed by retired Madras High Court Judge B. Gokuldas.
