For many dog owners, adoption is a good choice. While some first-time dog parents or people with younger children prefer to get a dog from a responsible breeder, adoption gives you the opportunity to give a loving home to a dog who may not have had the best start in life.
You can give your new puppy lots of love and affection – as well as some of the best dog treatsof course! It’s something that can be incredibly rewarding.
If you’re considering adoption, regardless of your circumstances, check out this new book by Lara Eurdolian King (available on Amazon) designed to educate families about adoption—based on the true story of an elderly dog.
Charlie the Pomeranian, now 18, was living in a hotel in Palm Springs, California, in 2016 when King met him on vacation. He was living in the hotel lobby as part of a pet adoption program in which one dog at a time lived in the hotel until it found a forever home.
King became friends with Charlie and went for walks with him while she was at the hotel. The situation made her sad, she explained in an interview with Good morning Americagiven his age, and she gradually fell in love with the puppy.
Although she had never adopted a dog before and had much more experience rescuing cats, she decided she couldn’t leave him behind. She said, “To be honest, it almost broke my heart when I saw him living there… he was the dog who had been in the program the longest. He didn’t look quite as fluffy and healthy as he does today at 18, but I knew we could change that, or at least give him a very comfortable, loving life.”
In fact, Charlie now looks happy and healthy – and he is even the inspiration for King’s book “Charlie at the Pom Springs Hotel”.
The book tells the story of Charlie, who works as a tour guide at the hotel, befriends the local animals, but is desperate for a forever home. In the book, King says, Charlie is a happy dog but feels like he misses his family. “Spoiler alert: His wish comes true,” she explains.
Her goal with the book is to help families, including those who have adopted children themselves, and parents who want to teach their children about adoption, understand that adoption is a “happy way” to find a family for life.
