Ukraine blows up Russian drone hangars in Shahed

Ukraine has released satellite images that claim to show the destruction of Russian drone hangars in Shahed, more than 130 kilometers from the front line.

The before and after photos show extensive destruction of the buildings of the Yeisk air base in Krasnodar Region, which houses a drone training center and warehouse.

Ukraine said the attacks destroyed training buildings and command and communications centers and killed personnel learning how to operate Iranian-designed unmanned aircraft.

The attack was carried out by the Ukrainian Navy in cooperation with the security service, the military said.

The attack is believed to have occurred on the night of June 21, when Russian Telegram channels reported fires following a massive attack in the area.

Shahed drones, also known by the Russian designation Geran-2, have been used by Moscow since September 2022 to “surround” Ukrainian air defenses.

They are also called “suicide drones” or “kamikaze drones” because they fly into targets and explode on impact. They are cheap – reportedly costing just £15,000 each – and are deployed in large numbers.

Moscow is reportedly increasing production of the drones with the goal of producing 6,000 by summer 2025.
