Denis Villeneuve of Dune 2 explains what was most painful for him when he cut it from the book

Dune: Part 2 director Denis Villeneuve has revealed one of the “most painful” things he had to cut from the upcoming film.

Although the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune was split into two films, Villeneuve was unable to incorporate every detail, resulting in parts of the source material being cut.

“When you adapt, there’s always some kind of violence to the source material,” Villeneuve told Entertainment Weekly. “You have to change things, you have to bend, you have to make painful choices.”

In Dune: Part 2, there are changes to key characters such as the Fremen warrior Chani (played by Zendaya), who is much more independent and open towards her lover Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) compared to the novel. Anya Taylor-Joy’s character Alia also seems different than in the book.

Of course, there are some characters that don’t appear at all in Dune: Part 2. Villeneuve had to make the difficult decision about which characters would not return.

“One of the most painful decisions for me was Thufir Hawat,” he revealed. “He’s a character I absolutely love, but I decided right at the beginning that I was doing a Bene Gesserit adaptation. That meant that Mentats aren’t as present as they should be, but that’s the nature of adaptation.”

Mentats are people who have been trained from an early age to perform sophisticated mathematical and strategic calculations. Stephen McKinley Henderson played the Mentat Thufir Hawat in the first film, but did not appear in the second film due to Villeneuve’s vision for the sequel.

Meanwhile, Villeneuve has already started working on a possible third Dune film, although it has not yet been confirmed. “We are at an early stage. We are on the right track. A lot of work has already been done, but there is still a lot of work to be done to have something solid to shoot,” he said. Digital Spy.

Dune: Part 2 is in theaters now. Dune can be watched on Netflix.
