With the Fourth of July fast approaching, the Michigan City Police Department would like to remind everyone that fireworks may only be set off by persons 18 years of age or older and only during the days and times specified in City Ordinance 54-231.

Within the city limits of Michigan City, fireworks may only be set off on the following days and at the following times:

June 29th – July 3rd from 5:00 p.m. to 2 hours after sunset July 4th from 10:00 a.m. to midnight
July 5-9 from 5:00 p.m. to 2 hours after sunset
December 31st, 10:00 am to January 1st, 1:00 am

The city says anyone who sets off fireworks outside of the established dates and times will face a citation. Fines for fireworks-related violations are:

$50 – 1st offense
$100 – 2nd violation
$250 – 3rd+ violations
Fireworks are a great sight and a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July. However, they can also be dangerous and can be a nuisance to your neighbors and their pets.
