Canadian singer Shubh defends eye-catching hoodie with the print “Indira Gandhi’s assassination”

Canadian singer and rapper Shubhneet Singh (affectionately known as Shubh) was involved in a controversy during a concert in London. During his performance on stage, someone threw a black hoodie at him, which he was wearing during the concert. Netizens accused him of flaunting a hoodie with an image of a map of Punjab and a caricature of the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

A pro-Khalistani user named SherePanjabUK shared a video online. “Singer Shubh was seen promoting a hoodie glorifying Indira Gandhi’s killers Satwant and Beant Singh on stage during his live performance in London,” the caption of the video reads.

After this incident, the Canadian singer was heavily criticized on the Internet.

What Shubh said about the hoodie controversy

The Canadian singer wrote in his Instagram story that he didn’t know what was on the hoodie.

Shubh wrote, “No matter what I do, some people will find something to throw at me. At my first show in London, a lot of clothes, jewelry and phones were thrown away. I was there to perform, not to see what was thrown at me and what was on it. The team has worked very hard over the last few months to perform for you all.”

However, some people on the Reddit platform felt that even if he had made a mistake, he should have apologized. “He should have said he doesn’t support Khalistani terrorism. He’s just saying I didn’t see the picture. That’s not an apology,” wrote one Reddit user.

Some disagreed with Shubh’s statement. One user wrote that the hoodie stunt looked planned. “By lifting the hoodie and spreading it out properly, the image printed on the back is visible. He is not a fool. He already knows what kind of images are on the hoodie.”

“He still doesn’t apologize or express regret,” said another user.

Notably, a clothing brand called Akaal Clothing also shared photos and videos of the Shubh of Birmingham concert on Instagram. In the photos, it is clearly visible that the hoodie depicts a map of Punjab with a caricature of the assassination of India Gandhi on it.

In September this year, Shubhneet Singh’s India tour was cancelled due to his alleged support of the Khalistan movement. One of his posts sparked a controversy two months ago. The rapper had shared a distorted map of India in his Instagram stories and captioned it, “Pray for Punjab.”

He later said he was “extremely disheartened” by the cancellation of his India tour.

The rapper posted on his Instagram page: “As a young rapper and singer from Punjab, it has been my lifelong dream to become internationally known with my music. However, recent events have undone my hard work and progress and I wanted to say a few words to express my shock and sadness.”

He described India as his country and said his “ancestors and gurus did not bat an eyelid” when it came to making sacrifices for the country’s freedom.

“India is MY country too. I was born here. It is the land of my GURUS and my ANCESTORS who did not even bat an eyelid to make sacrifices for the freedom of this country, for its glory and for family. And Punjab is my soul, Punjab is in my blood. Whatever I am today, I am because I am a Punjabi,” he added in his Instagram post.
