Trump on new law in Louisiana: “I love the Ten Commandments” | MyStateline

(The Hill) – Former President Trump is among the supporters of the controversial and first-in-the-nation Louisiana law that requires the Ten Commandments to be prominently displayed in classrooms from elementary school through college.

“I LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS AND MANY OTHER PLACES TOO,” Trump wrote on his online platform Truth Social this week. “READ IT – HOW CAN WE GET WRONG AS A NATION??? THIS MAY ACTUALLY BE THE FIRST BIG STEP TOWARDS THE REVIVAL OF RELIGION, WHICH IS DIRECTLY NEEDED IN OUR COUNTRY.”

“BRING BACK TTC!!!” Trump added, referring to the Ten Commandments.

The White House and the Department of Education did not respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the new Louisiana law or Trump’s comments. President Biden, who is locked in a bitter re-election battle with Republican Trump, has also not commented publicly on the issue.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican in a deeply conservative and religious state, signed House Bill 71 on Wednesday after it easily passed the state’s Republican-controlled legislature.

Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, announced they would fight the law, which they consider “manifestly unconstitutional.”

The Biden administration did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the official position on the Louisiana law. The president is a devout Catholic who regularly celebrates Mass with his family.

Opponents of the bill have announced that they will take the matter to court.

“It is not the place of politicians to impose their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools,” said a statement from the Louisiana chapter of the ACLU, which was also joined by Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
