At least three people were injured when they were struck by lightning at the River Highland Golf Course in Cromwell, Connecticut. Police reportedly arrived at the scene just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a lightning strike near the 5th hole. They found that a tree had been struck by lightning. The PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship golf tournament was in progress at the time.

At least three people were injured by a lightning strike. River Highland Golf Course in Cromwell, Connecticut. Police reportedly arrived on the scene just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a lightning strike near the 5th hole. They found a tree that had been struck by lightning, injuring three people. Two of the injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment, but their conditions are currently unknown.
At the time, the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship golf tournament was in progress. Play was suspended at 3:30 p.m. due to a severe weather warning. Spectators were advised to seek shelter and players were escorted to the safety of the clubhouse. Despite these precautions, three spectators were struck by lightning.
Meanwhile, strong storms were affecting several parts of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Hartford and surrounding regions, including West Hartford, Newington, Glastonbury, Marlborough, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield. The weather service warned that thunderstorms could bring “strong to damaging winds as well as localized flash flooding.”
In the evening, thunderstorms brought heavy rain and strong winds. In some cities, hailstones were also reported.
Amid the storm, more than 10,000 customers in the state were without power. Eversource, which serves 1,312,610 customers in Connecticut, reported 11,584 customers without power just before 8 p.m. Saturday. United Illuminating, which serves 344,849 customers in 17 Connecticut towns, reported 1,009 customers without power as of 8 p.m.
The National Weather Service has also predicted thunderstorms for Sunday.
