Chris Russo praises Mike Evans

July 24, 2024

Big Mike Evans fan.

Joe is still seething with anger because the high priest of an organization that likes to portray itself as a kind of highly intellectual think tank thinks so highly of Mike Evans that he ranks Evans only the 20th best receiver in football.

And DK Metcalf was even lower.

Anyone who actually believes this and then holds out their hand and demands cash in exchange for convoluted “player notes” should be sent to a re-education camp.

Or be charged with organized crime.

(What’s next? Sabby the Goat charges $2,000 for a youth camp to teach kids the basics? Josh Freeman wants $500 per person to keep him from coming to his football camp?)

A far more reasonable person with a far bigger platform than Sam Monson used his SiriusXM satellite airwaves to defend Evans as a truly overlooked star in the NFL. The one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo discussed BSPN’s rankings of receivers last week, compiled by some 80 NFL coaches, scouts and lawyers. Evans was ranked No. 8.

Russo didn’t have a big problem with that, but said Evans was maybe a bit too low and shouldn’t be overlooked.

“Evans is a very underrated receiver,” Russo began. “He’s a Hall of Famer. He’s extremely underrated. He’s got size. He goes deep. He doesn’t say anything. He’s just very, very good.”

Russo believes Evans’ class should be touted, including the fact that Evans is a loyal team player, not a diva, and has spent his entire career with the Bucs, including some truly terrible years.

“He’s one of those receivers that doesn’t make a big deal,” Russo said. “You know a lot of those receivers (in BSPN’s top 10) have changed teams. You have to keep that in mind.”

“(Devante) Adams changed teams. (Cheetah) Hill changed teams. (AJ) Brown changed teams. Evans? Didn’t have a great quarterback (for most of his career), but made sure he stayed with the same franchise. You have to give him credit for that.”

Russo is absolutely right. Evans was always focused on the game, not on all the other stuff. And this attitude and focus seem to have paid off.
