“ThunderCats” author Declan Shalvey to direct new Terminator series

Dynamite Entertainment has announced that Declan Shalvey, the author of Thunder Cats, take the helm of their new Terminator Series, set to be released in October 2024. Luke Sparrow will be the artist. The story will be set in the present day, with Skynet sending Terminators to various targets in space and time in a massive offensive. The first issue will be released in October 2024, 40 years after the original was released Terminator film, with covers by Shalvey, Edwin Galmon, Joshua “Sway” Swaby and David Cousens, as well as a special collector’s cover by Alex Ross based on the artwork he created for the “Burning Earth” storyline at age 19.

“The approach of this series is new situations, new dilemmas in each issue. Most of the time they are stories that are complete in one piece, but as the series progresses, there may be some familiar faces that will appear…” said writer Declan Shalvey. “We’re aiming for a more stripped down, lurid approach to the book. As innovative and groundbreaking as the first film was, it was also grounded in its setting, was noir-like and dark as hell. An unstoppable force is coming to kill you – that’s the element of the franchise that I want to lean into.”

Dynamite announced in April that it had acquired the license for the property (see “Dynamite Gets ‘The Terminator'”). Their crowdfunding program for collections of the older comics raised $235,800 on BackerKit earlier this year.

Shalvey’s Thunder Cats had over 170,000 orders for the first issue (see “Orders Reach 170,000 for ‘ThunderCats’ No. 1”).
