Controversial member of the X-Men gets his first solo series

As part of the new X-Men relaunch, “From the Ashes,” following the end of the Krakoan Age for the X-Men, a number of X-Men characters have received their own solo series, including ongoing series like Phoenix and Storm, and miniseries like Dazzler and Mystique. Now, one of the most controversial members of the X-Men, Psylocke, is about to be added to that list, as Marvel announces a new Psylocke series for this fall, with details to be revealed later this week at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Psylocke is currently one of the main members of Cyclops’ X-Men team based in Alaska, which consists of some of the most powerful members of the X-Men and serves as a strike force to protect the rest of the mutants in the world by serving as a deterrent to any actions against mutants.

What is Psylocke’s new series about?

Marvel's teaser for Psylocke's series

Marvel has only released one teaser for the series, which states that Psylocke is “designed for violence.” This refers to the fact that, like many other members of the X-Men, she was essentially “built” to be an assassin. In her case, she served a Japanese crime boss. However, she suffered a severe brain injury and subsequently lost control of her own body.

Later, Psylocke (then known as Kwannon or “Revenge”) returned in the body of another woman and became an ally of the X-Men, but also became infected with the deadly anti-mutant Legacy virus. She died, but was eventually resurrected (comics, people!). She eventually returned to her original body and has served the X-Men faithfully as Psylocke for years now.

Why is Psylocke such a controversial member of the X-Men?

As mentioned, Kwannon lost her body to another woman. The problem is that the woman she lost her body to was Betsy Braddock, the longtime X-Men member known as Psylocke. Betsy was a white woman and was given Kwannon’s body due to some machinations (at first it seemed like Betsy’s body had just been altered, later we learned she was stuck in Kwannon’s body). The idea of a white woman now fighting in the body of an Asian woman was always a little disturbing, even more so when it was revealed that Kwannon was alive and now in Betsy’s original body.

Eventually, however, Kwannon got her own body back and Betsy was back in HER own body. Betsy insisted that Kwannon take the name “Psylocke,” and for most casual fans of the X-Men, Kwannon has essentially taken over the role Betsy once held as Psylocke in the X-Men. Betsy eventually became the new Captain Britain and she and Kwannon worked through their issues together. While Betsy has had her own series a few times over the years, this is the first time Kwannon is getting her own solo comic book.

Details will be announced at the From the Ashes panel this week.
