Rite Aid closes another 50 stores in Ohio and Michigan

Rite Aid is closing 50 stores in Ohio and Michigan, according to recent filings in the retailer’s bankruptcy proceedings.

The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey last October, filed three court documents last week listing 50 locations it plans to close, including 33 in Michigan and 17 in Ohio. Earlier this month, the retailer filed documents listing more than 60 additional locations it plans to close in those two states.

In June, Rite Aid filed documents listing 12 store closures in Michigan and 15 in Ohio. Shortly thereafter Detroit Free Press reported that Rite Aid employees were told the company plans to close all of its stores in Michigan and most of its stores in Ohio.

Rite Aid also submitted a The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget sent a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) last month advising of the planned closure of its distribution center in Waterford, Michigan. The closure would result in the layoff of 191 employees.

On its website, Rite Aid lists 185 stores in Michigan and 141 stores in Ohio. It was not immediately clear how many would remain after the latest round of planned closures. A Rite Aid spokesperson could not be reached for comment on the remaining stores in those two states.

When the retailer filed for bankruptcy last year, it initially announced the closure of 154 stores. Since then, it has added hundreds more stores across the country. The Philadelphia-based retailer entered bankruptcy with 2,111 stores. According to its website, 1,591 stores are currently still in operation.
