Gospel singer Kim Burrell apologizes to the LGBTQ+ community

Kim Burrell has apparently started a new chapter and apologized to the LGBTQ+ community.

Accepting the Aretha Franklin Icon Award at the Stellar Awards, the gospel singer offered a sincere apology and said she needed to embrace God’s people. “I want to apologize to the LGBTQ community. Let’s give them a huge round of applause. We want them to be strong and to know sincerely that we all have to do the work to be able to embrace God’s people and show His love to everyone.”

She continued, “I hope that this award and this moment can be the beginning of building bridges and listening to one another as we pursue peace with all people and develop the character of God, which requires seeing God.”

Her speech sparked mixed reactions on social media, with one user on X (formerly known as Twitter) writing, “That tone… she could have kept that.” Another user wrote, “Whatever she originally said about gays cost her money… because I know her mean ass has no regrets.”

Burrell’s apology came after she received backlash for a 2017 sermon in which she called homosexuality perverse. “Anyone in this room who is dealing with a homosexual spirit should ask God to release it. Play with it in 2017, you will die.”

In a video she posted on social media at the time, she reiterated her statement: “To all who struggle with the homosexual spirit: I love you because God loves you, but God hates the sin in you and me.”

This isn’t the first time Burrell has been in the spotlight for controversial comments. She has given sermons about COVID-19, about not wearing a mask or about getting vaccinated. What do you think about that?
