Beyoncé gives Kamala Harris permission to use her song “Freedom” for the election campaign

During her first official visit to her campaign headquarters on July 22, Vice President Kamala Harris marched out to Beyoncé’s song “Freedom.” According to CNNHarris received permission from Beyoncé’s representatives to use the song for her presidential campaign.

Although the singer has not officially endorsed Harris, allowing her to use one of her songs speaks louder than words.

“Freedom” – featuring Kendrick Lamar – comes from Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade. The song was widely used as an anthem following the death of George Floyd in 2020. At her campaign headquarters, Harris ran to the lyrics, which read: “Freedom, freedom, where are you? / ‘Cause I need freedom too / I break chains all alone / I won’t let my freedom rot in hell / I’ll keep running / ‘Cause a winner don’t quit.”

Beyoncé has supported several Democratic candidates throughout her career. She sang the national anthem at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013. In 2016, she and Jay-Z headlined a concert for Hillary Clinton in Cleveland. In 2020, Beyoncé made a post on her Instagram supporting President Joe Biden and Harris and urging her followers to vote.

“New, youthful, sharp energy!!!!” Knowles’ post read. “Putting aside personal ego, power and fame. That is the definition of a great leader. Thank you President Biden for your service and leadership. Here we go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Here we go.”

Harris set a new fundraising record by raising $81 million for her presidential campaign in 24 hours, and Win With Black Men raised over $1 million for her in less than two hours.
