Few figures in baseball history are more polarizing than Pete Rose, the charismatic hit king who served a lifetime ban for gambling.

Fans can relive Rose’s meteoric rise to stardom and his stunning fall from grace in the new HBO documentary series “Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose.” The first episode of the four-part docuseries will be released on Wednesday, July 24.

The documentary takes viewers through Rose’s playing career, during which his combination of skill, grit, exuberance and ferocity earned him a place among the greatest baseball players of all time – and the revered nickname “Charlie Hustle.” His 4,256 hits remain the most of any player in baseball history.

But as the documentary shows, Rose’s downfall was just as notorious. In 1989, Rose was banned for life for placing bets on MLB games. A price he is still paying today: Rose is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

To tell Rose’s polarizing story, the documentarians conduct a series of interviews, including with Mike Schmidt, Ken Griffey Sr., Eduardo Perez, Al Michaels, Marty Brennaman, Pete Rose Jr. and Rose himself.

What is “Charlie Hustle” about?

“Charlie Hustle” chronicles the rise and fall of Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hitter, who is serving a lifetime ban for gambling.

Rose, 81, is making one final attempt to be reinstated in the MLB and the Baseball Hall of Fame 35 years after his lifetime ban for baseball betting.

HBO’s press release for the documentary series states, among other things: “‘Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose’ is a fascinating portrait of a complex personality full of contradictions – a person who is searching for redemption but is not quite ready for complete repentance.”
