Sam Smith looks back on the days when they literally went beyond their skis.

The 32-year-old “Stay with Me” singer revealed in a July 18 episode of the podcast “Sidetracked” that she “completely tore” her anterior cruciate ligament in a “terrible” skiing accident and was therefore unable to walk for weeks.

“I was an idiot,” Smith said. “The second day I went down a black run. … I couldn’t do it. They took me down in a blood bag. That was the worst.”

The Oscar winner did not specify when the accident occurred, but explained that as a result of the injury she was “basically unable to walk on that leg for a month,” which was the “first time ever that I was unable to move.”

Sam Smith is ready to indulge in a new chapter of self-acceptance on the album “Gloria”

According to the Mayo Clinic, an ACL injury is a tear or sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament, which connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. It occurs most often in sports such as soccer, basketball, football and skiing. Treatment may include surgery, the clinic notes, though Smith noted that she has not gone that route.

During that time, Smith said, they were “very anxious” after suffering from anxiety for years. But the Grammy winner said she used that time of immobility “as an excuse” to take better care of her mental health. “I’ve really been focusing on my mental stuff for the last seven months,” Smith said.

As part of this strategy, according to Smith, they tried to avoid making phone calls in the evening and to spend the last hour before bedtime “by candlelight.”

“Most nights I fail,” Smith said. “I’m on my phone, texting. But as best I can, I try to have dim lights before I go to bed, and that works.”

Smith has spoken about her mental health struggles before. “I was always sad, but for the first time I really had mental health issues like panic attacks, anxiety and depression,” the singer said in a 2020 interview with Apple Music, according to The Independent. “It hit me really hard.”

Last year, Smith had to cancel tour dates due to a vocal cord injury. “My vocal cords are healing, and after a week of vocal rest, things are looking good,” Smith said after a doctor’s visit in June 2023. “It looks like I’m back to normal for the rest of the shows, and that’s really great news.”
