The weather was on our side this week, with temperatures dropping and giving us plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. Our weekend started Friday night with the annual cornhole tournament. Eight teams competed in double elimination play. Instructor Joe Duffy kept the competition close with his cornhole measuring line made by the Maine State Penitentiary. The teams had a thrilling battle, with Sheila and Bob Flory taking second place and Joe Duffy and Eleanor Marshall taking first place, and they were delighted to win a gift card to the Southport General Store.

The wind cooperated on Saturday and we had a sunny day with a perfect southerly breeze for the Five Islands Ice Cream Race. Competitors were able to cruise up to the Five Islands and then back to Cozy Harbor. No tacking! Near the Five Islands a family of bottlenose dolphins came through the fleet, adding to the fun of the afternoon. It was great to see nine tacking maneuvers with participants of all ages, from young children to adults. The only problem with the race was a disorganized process for serving the ice cream at the Five Islands. How did the crew of the fifth boat to arrive at the Five Islands get their ice cream before the first boat? This issue does not seem to be addressed in the official US Sailing rule book. After some discussion, it was decided that the day’s trophies would go to the first three boats to arrive at the Five Islands. Therefore, the first place trophy went to the team of Suri Kelchner, Taylor Smith and Hallie Mayer and second place went to Graydon and Paige Smith. Maine State Opti’s will be hosted by SYC again this year. We are looking for families to host three teams looking for lodging. Contact Chase Brinegar at [email protected] if you can host July 31-August 1.

Tickets for the Lobster Bake on Saturday this weekend are going fast. You can buy them online or register at the club using paper registration. The deadline is Thursday evening.

For the Rock the Boat 5K fundraiser in aid of the Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation, we have a deadline of Wednesday noon to be guaranteed a shirt. We try not to overorder and need to place the order on Wednesday. Please RSVP if you would like to be there on August 3rd.
