Michigan State Police investigate two highway shootings within 24 hours

(CBS) – Michigan State Police are investigating two highway shootings that occurred less than 24 hours apart in Detroit over the weekend.

The first shooting occurred early Saturday morning on Interstate 75, the second later in the day on the Lodge Freeway.

According to MSP, a motorist was shot around 1 a.m. Saturday while traveling northbound on I-75 near Holbrook in Detroit. The victim told police that one driver cut off the right of way from the other driver and that profanities and hand gestures were exchanged before the trigger was pulled. The vehicle was hit, but the driver was not injured.

Later that day, around 3:30 p.m., MSP closed all lanes of the Lodge following a minor accident near Seven Mile Road. The highway ended, both drivers left the scene and exchanged profanities before shots were fired on the highway near Wyoming Avenue. A woman reported that another driver shot at her, but she was not injured.

Police confirmed that both incidents were isolated cases of road rage. A Detroit artist who performs under his stage name Kazzie the Gypsy offered advice on how to deal with road rage.

“Leave. Leave now. Don’t stay here, don’t even try any of this. Don’t try to talk to people who you know are mentally unsound,” he told CBS News Detroit.

According to MSP, officers were at times confronted with some sort of “organized” shooting, but now it is road rage, and police say Saturday’s two shootings were entirely preventable.
