Tyler Zuber of the Rays is back in the MLB after rediscovering his love of baseball with the LI Ducks

Tyler Zuber credits his time with a minor league team on Long Island with “rediscovering his love for baseball.”

The Rays pitcher made his first Major League appearance since 2021 in the sixth inning of Monday’s 9-1 loss to the Yankees in the Bronx.

Zuber missed the entire 2022 baseball season and most of the 2023 season due to shoulder impingement syndrome and began this season with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.

There, according to a report by Ryan Bass during the Bally Sports broadcast, the 29-year-old right-hander felt like he had rediscovered his love for the game.

“It’s pretty poetic how baseball works when Tyler Zuber comes back here to the major leagues, just a few miles from where he revived his career as an independent baseball player for Long Island,” Bass reported live. “I said that’s where he rediscovered his love of baseball. He didn’t really know if he would ever get the chance to come back here to the major leagues.

“He said he cried the night he found out he was going to be called back up here to the major leagues. He wasn’t sure if that moment would ever come again.”

Zuber pitched in six games for the Ducks this season, posting an ERA of 1.58.

In 5 ⅔ innings for the Atlantic League ballclub, he allowed just five hits and struck out ten batters while being credited with two saves.

The Rays purchased Zuber’s contract in May and he reported to the club’s Triple-A affiliate team in Durham, where he remained until he was promoted to the major league roster after the All-Star break.

“We are excited to see Tyler return to the major leagues,” Ducks manager Lew Ford said in a press release Monday. “He did an exceptional job for us earlier this year and truly deserves this opportunity.”

In his first Major League appearance since September 30, 2021, Zuber threw 1 ⅓ innings, allowed one run on two hits and struck out two players.
