Country singer Rory Feek remarries 8 years after the death of his wife and musical partner
Almost a decade after his personal tragedy, country musician Rory Feek is celebrating the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Last week, Feek confirmed that he married Rebecca, his daughter Indiana’s teacher, in a ceremony in Montana on July 14. The wedding came about eight years after the death of his first wife and longtime musical partner. Joey Feek.
Feek, who won a Grammy for his 2017 album “Hymns,” wrote at length about his wedding in a blog titled “The Wedding Singer” posted on his personal website on Friday.
And although he had previously addressed his romance with Rebecca, he said he was initially hesitant to do so in Indiana’s presence because the 10-year-old knew his partner as “‘Miss Rebecca,’ her teacher and our friend.”
“Her love for her mom is so big and so important in her life,” Feek explained. “Neither Rebecca nor I wanted to hurt that in any way. And so we just waited and watched to see if Indiana would ever get the idea that Rebecca could be more than just a friend to her dad and to her.”
By March, however, Indiana seemed to have gotten the message and even directly urged Rebecca to “marry daddy.” That same day, she told her father, “My mommy’s been dead for a long time. And if she marries you, maybe she could be my new mother…”
“Of course, I told her, wiping a few tears from my eyes, that I thought it was a wonderful idea,” Feek wrote.
Feek was married to Joey, Indiana’s mother, from 2002 until her death from cervical cancer in 2016. As the country-bluegrass duo Joey + Rory, the couple released seven studio albums, including “His and Hers” (2012) and “Made to Last” (2013).
Feek, who has two other daughters from his first marriage to Tamara Gilmer, has not yet started a musical collaboration with his new wife. However, as he wrote on his blog, he sang a new song at the wedding called “I Do”, which is dedicated to Rebecca.
The song “represents the moment when a beautiful past meets an even more beautiful present,” he noted. By far the most emotional moment of the wedding was “when Indiana received the gift of having a mommy back in her life” and “Rebecca received the gift of being a mother.”
“And we became a family,” he wrote.
