Morocco’s health sector unions announce five-day strike

The coordination of unions in the health sector has called for a five-day national strike that begins today, Monday 22 July, and will last until next Friday. The strike affects hospitals, administrative offices and training centres. However, the emergency room and resuscitation services will remain operational.

This measure follows what the unions see as a delayed response from the government regarding the implementation of a sectoral agreement. The union met with Health Minister Khaled Ait Taleb on July 19 to discuss the government’s proposals. While the unions expressed their willingness to move forward, they complained of a “lack of progress” and sent a letter to the prime minister calling for faster action.

Frustrated by the government’s “unbearable silence”, the unions have decided to go on strike. They hold the Prime Minister “responsible for any negative consequences for citizens’ healthcare”.

Earlier this month, one day after a march in Rabat was prevented, the coordination announced a two-week permanent strike. The planned strike days are Monday to Friday (15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 July 2024) and the current week (22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 July).
