Houston Astros promote former World Series champion as part of recent roster restructuring

After fighting their way back into contention before the All-Star break, the Houston Astros seemed like prime acquisition candidates to bolster their roster. When they took over first place in the AL West, their plans were all but sealed before the July 30 trade deadline.

It remains to be seen how aggressive they will be, particularly in two areas that need improvement.

Starting pitcher seems to be the area that will get most of management’s attention, but they could use another reliable hitter at first base to complement Jon Singleton.

As the Astros scour the market for options, they have decided to give one of their former World Series champions another chance with the franchise after signing him to a minor league contract in mid-July.

According to Chandler Rome of The athleteHouston promoted Aledmys Diaz. In a related move, they optioned Grae Kessinger and designated for assignment infielder David Hensley to make room on the 40-man roster.

It wasn’t an outstanding season for Diaz.

The 33-year-old managed 3 of 29 goals in his 12 games with the Oakland Athletics this season before being released on July 5.

This is certainly a good buy for the Astros, as they are bringing in someone who hit 12 home runs and had 38 RBIs in 92 games with Houston just two years ago on the way to the championship.

He’s probably not a viable solution to the team’s problems at first base, but calling him a week before the deadline and asking what he can do will give them a chance to figure out if they really need to consider another option.

If the Astros believe Diaz can be a solid hitter for them in the future, they can devote their resources to signing one of the most promising starting pitchers on the market, which will significantly increase their chances in the World Series.
