Union members at Hanover Foods have authorized a strike if the company cannot agree on a new collective bargaining agreement by the end of the month, according to a union press release.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 union, which represents nearly 300 workers at Hanover Foods factories, issued a press release Monday saying workers had overwhelmingly voted to strike if agreement on a collective bargaining agreement cannot be reached by Aug. 2, 2024.

The workers’ most recent employment contract expired at the end of 2023, the union said, and the employees would continue working under a contract extension.

A major point of contention in the negotiations is the cuts in pension and health insurance benefits, said union president Wendell Young in the press release. In addition, according to Young, the wage increases are not keeping pace with inflation.

Young said in the press release that the union intends to provide the company with a seven-day strike notice this week.

The union launched an online petition demanding a better contract, which had collected more than 3,500 signatures by Monday.

According to the press release, Hanover Foods employs more than 2,000 people at seven plants in three states.
