Azerbaijan highlights COP29 preparations at 8th Climate Change Ministerial Meeting in China

Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President-elect Mukhtar Babayev highlighted preparations for COP29 at the 8th Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change (MoCA) in the Chinese city of Wuhan, News.Az reports.

The minister stressed that the fight against climate change is a concern of all parties.

He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s contribution to combating climate change and the initiatives the country has taken.

The 8th Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change (MoCA) entitled “Strengthening and Enabling Global Action on Climate Change. Implementation towards the purposes and long-term objectives of the Paris Agreement” has begun in Wuhan.
During the event, organised by China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), host of COP28, Azerbaijan, host of COP29, and Brazil, host of COP30, discussions centred on cooperation in the fight against climate change.

The MoCA in Wuhan is an important meeting point for ministers and high-level climate diplomats, taking place shortly after the UNFCCC interim meeting in June. It will be an opportunity to raise sensitive issues in the climate negotiations to a higher political level.

In their speeches, Ding Zhongli, Vice Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress, China’s Minister of Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu, Chairman of MoCA, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, President of COP28, Brazil’s National Secretary for Climate Change and Ana Toni, host of COP30, pointed out that the MoCA platform, established in 2017, plays an important role in promoting multilateral processes related to climate change.

The two-day meeting will also feature breakout sessions on “Overview of COP28 and expectations for COP29”, “Transition to a low-carbon economy”, “Climate resilience”, “Renewable energy implementation” and other topics.
