Cults let a love blossom on the delicate ‘Hung the Moon’

Since they first asked us to leave our cramped indoor spaces almost 15 years ago, Cults will always be a summer band for us. Now the New York alt-pop duo of multi-instrumentalists Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion stays true to the season and releases a new album To the ghosts this Friday (July 26) via Imperial.

The final track, a haunting and tender number called “Hung The Moon,” hit streams this month as the album’s final cinematic taster. And it looks to the future through a Lynch-esque fever dream of retro-pop wistfulness, with Follin expressing some lyrical optimism in her angelic voice: “Let it saturate, a love in bloom / I know it’s you, you hung the moon.”

“It has a Twin PeaksRoadhouse vibe,” admits Oblivion. “It’s a sweet nursery rhyme with a menacing undertone. It goes back to the concept of growing up. Life doesn’t stop when you’ve ticked all the boxes; it gets crazier. There are always opportunities, adversities and fun ahead.”

In addition to the album release, Cults also have a headlining tour scheduled for August that will avoid New England entirely. However, the duo will return to us on September 27th to support Vampire Weekend at TD Garden before heading out for more headlining gigs in Europe.
