Michigan receives 9 million federal grant for renewable energy

Washington — Michigan will receive $129 million in federal grants to speed up the siting, zoning and permitting of renewable energy projects across the state, the Biden administration announced Monday.

The funds are part of a $4.3 billion initiative by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through state, local and regional initiatives.

“As climate change continues to have more extreme impacts on communities across the country, we are using every tool at our disposal to reduce pollution, lower energy costs for families, advance environmental justice and make our communities more resilient,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.

The Michigan funds will go to the state’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, which is working toward generating 60% renewable energy by 2030. The funds build on previous, smaller grants designed to help the state and regional government organizations near Detroit and Grand Rapids compete in statewide funding competitions.

“Selected recipients have presented ambitious plans to advance sustainable agriculture, deploy clean industrial technologies, reduce emissions and energy costs in residential and commercial buildings, and provide communities with cost- and energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions, all while creating economic and professional development opportunities,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan.

The awards come from the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program, which was funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden administration’s signature climate law passed in 2022. A total of 25 projects in 30 states will be recognized.

The state received $3 million from the program last year to develop a comprehensive statewide plan to reduce emissions and improve resilience to the impacts of climate change. That plan was released last month and lays out how the state will implement an earlier climate agenda released in 2022.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and EGLE have committed, under her leadership, to achieving “100 percent carbon neutrality across Michigan’s economy by mid-century.”
