His widow Vicky shared the clipping on the occasion of his 60th birthday

Chris Cornell’s widow Vicky celebrated the Soundgarden and Audioslave legend’s 60th birthday yesterday (July 21) by releasing a preview of his unreleased cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.”

As a tribute to her late husband, who passed away in May 2017 at the age of 52, Vicky Cornell shared a poignant montage video of Chris over the years, featuring his emotional rendition of Tracy Chapman’s theme song.

“Chris would have been 60 today,” wrote Vicky Cornell. “While everyone who loved him is sad that he is no longer here, it is all of you, the fans who shaped him, whose love has kept his legacy alive. I am so grateful to all of you for that.”

“Although I remember him best as the wonderful husband, father and human being he was, I want to celebrate his entire life and everything he gave us.

“On his 60th birthday, we can all celebrate his genius as an artist who redefined music, but also as an incredible man who touched and changed lives. He is an icon and gave so much to all of us – his unique voice, his poetry, his creativity… his life was a gift to so many.”

Referring to the unreleased music, Vicky wrote: “And as you can hear, there’s more to come!!!

“I’m sharing this to thank you all for your love and support and to celebrate together. We love you Chris – happy birthday!”

In April 2023, after several years of bitter legal battles, Vicky Cornell and the surviving members of Soundgarden reached “an amicable out-of-court settlement” to release the “last songs the band and Chris worked on” before his untimely passing.

Seven months later, however, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron announced that the dispute was still ongoing.

When asked by an Italian Pearl Jam fan site whether the music would be released in 2024, he replied: “Unfortunately, I don’t think so.

“We’re still in the middle of a dispute with the estate and… Everything’s on hold right now and I can’t really go into detail unfortunately. But right now it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen next year. But hopefully soon – I’m not giving up hope.”
