Sydney’s most famous dessert bar Koi has now officially landed in Melbourne

There’s a sweet cure-all for our winter blues, Melbourne, in the form of an elegant dessert bar straight from Sydney’s sunny shores.

Koi Dessert Bar is a new 42-seat oasis in the chic Queen and Collins precinct of the CBD, where you’ll find aesthetic treats, drinks and stunning celebration cakes you won’t find anywhere else in Melbourne. The luxury brand was founded six years ago by the visionary Poernomo family, which includes Australia’s own ‘Dessert King’ and Masterchef alumnus Reynold Poernomo.

The family’s high-quality baked goods and desserts quickly gained popularity in Sydney, while Melbourne residents were forced to fly cakes across the border for friends and family – until now. As you might imagine, Koi Melbourne isn’t just your average coffee and cake meet-up cafe. Rather, it’s a dessert lover’s paradise with 150 delicious creations that are constantly changing, so you’re guaranteed something new and exciting to try every time you visit. It also offers a unique dining kitchen where you can sit, eat and watch the culinary magic unfold before your own eyes.

At first glance, you might think the impeccably prepared desserts are artistic sculptures rather than cakes, so beautiful are their presentations. But once you bite into them, you’ll be blown away by the fresh, local ingredients and innovative baking techniques that combine to create flavors inspired by nature.

For example, indulge in the Tatin, a delicious mix of crumbles made from mixed spices, caramel, cinnamon, apple, yogurt, cream cheese and almonds. Or indulge in the Lil’ Garden, an enchanting chocolate cake with matcha and raspberries that the team have described as an ode to the Melbourne Botanical Gardens.

“We’ve wanted to come to Melbourne for years,” says Koi co-founder Reynold Poernomo. “For us, the city is the pinnacle of creativity and culinary excellence in Australia. The venue and space at Queen and Collins reflects the identity we’ve shaped over the years and is a place where our commitment to innovation, art and taste can come to life. We want this to be a place where everyone comes to make a lasting impression on someone else.”

Koi Dessert Bar is located at 100 Queen Street and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 10pm. For more information, visit the website or be dazzled by Koi’s eye-candy grid on Instagram.
