FOX4 Love Fund, Betty Rae helps students with school supplies

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Summer vacation is almost over and the FOX4 Love Fund is teaming up with Betty Rae’s Ice Cream to help make back-to-school a little easier for families across the metro area.

“It takes a little bit of financial pressure off families, but it also gives the kids a real boost,” said Dionne Pleasant, Love Fund executive director. “When they go back to school, they feel really prepared and ready to succeed.”

On Sunday, International Ice Cream Day, 10 percent of Betty Rae’s profits went to the Love Fund’s annual school supply drive, helping to purchase items such as notebooks, pencils and other materials for students.

“School supplies are incredibly expensive and the kids have to provide for the whole class, the teachers take care of it,” said customer Sara Banner. “Every little bit helps, even if you don’t have children. They are our future, whether they are ours or someone else’s.”

According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $890 on school supplies.

As students return to school next month, the campaign aims to help ease the financial burden on families.

“We want to build a connection with the community so we can best support the programs that are doing a lot of good, so anything we can do to give back is great,” said Zach Doerfler, general manager of Betty Rae.
