In 2023, HBO’s The last of us The adaptation was the first video game adaptation to receive multiple Emmy nominations, with 24 being awarded in total and it ultimately winning 8 Emmys. Following the recent success of Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation, which was made in partnership with Bethesda, the series now joins last year’s prestige drama hit in receiving 16 Emmy nominations in 15 categories.

Nominations include the award for Outstanding Drama Series, where Fallout will compete against Shogun, The Crown, The Gilded Age and The Morning Show. Acclaimed actor Walter Goggins’ unforgettable performance as The Ghoul was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The series was also nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
Three nominations for prestigious awards as well as several other aspects of the show including costume design, prosthetic makeup effects, makeup, music and visual effects.
Fallout immediately captured the hearts of audiences worldwide and quickly became one of Amazon’s most successful TV series to date. 17 Emmy nominations may not be as many as The Last of Us, but if the series wins the award for Best Drama Series or Best Actor in a Drama Series, it would be the first series based on a video game to do so. As for the prestigious Best Drama Series award, Shogun is widely considered the one to beat at this year’s ceremony.
Even if the series comes away empty-handed, these nominations are a clear indication that video game adaptations, when done well, can be a hit with both critics and audiences. The 76th Emmy Awards will air on September 15 at 11 p.m. ET.
