FLAT BLACK feat. former FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH guitarist JASON HOOK releases music video for “A Bit Of Lightning”

Guitarist Jason Hook unveiled his new band Flat Black last year. The former Five Finger Death Punch guitarist joined forces with a trio of young and talented musicians and signed to Fearless Records. The band released their debut Dark Side Of The Brain on July 19th and a new music video for “A Bit Of Lightning” is available below. The album is also available with exclusive merch and vinyl. Order it here or here.

The album was produced by Hook and Chris Collier (Korn) and recorded at both Hook’s home studio and The Hideout.

Flat Black goes all out with sizzling riffs, a non-stop barrage of raw grooves, rich rhythms and sing-along choruses – whether you’re in a packed venue, in your car or in the shower, go all out and the track will send a rush of adrenaline through your veins.

As for the album as a whole, Hook is thrilled to finally be able to share it with fans who have been patiently waiting for even more new songs! “Well, we’re finally here,” he explains with a laugh! “No more people nagging me about when the album will be available. I’m so excited to be able to share these songs with the public. Dark Side OF The Brain is personal, every lyric has its origins in reality.”

The album cover is also personal, as Hook designed it himself.

About Flat Black:

“I feel like Flat Black is a secret I’ve been keeping for three years,” says Hook. “It’s finally time to introduce this band to the world. I’m grateful to Sully from Godsmack for giving us the chance to go on tour and play for such an amazing group of fans.”

Despite reaching a commercial peak with his previous band thanks to multi-platinum certifications, sold-out arena shows and a string of No. 1 singles, Hook is still as hungry for musical blood and thunder as he was the day he first picked up a guitar at age six. He’s eager to not only repeat, but surpass, his previous successes with his new band.

After leaving his previous band in February 2020, just before COVID-19 brought the entire world to a standstill, Hook wanted to take creative control and unleash his musical free spirit on a project that was truly his. He decided to bet on himself. With great risk comes great reward, and the decision to form Flat Black has clearly paid off in his favor.

“As a musician, I long for freedom and I wasn’t ready to stop creating,” says Hook.

“Life is short,” he continues. “We all want to be content and happy with what we want to achieve in life.”

The pandemic shutdown gave him the opportunity to put together the right musicians and carefully craft their debut album. Flat Black are equipped with an arsenal of riffs that will tear your teeth out of your gums, stadium-ready hooks, arena-ready anthems and choruses that are guaranteed to hit the spot. All of these factors combined make Flat Black a guaranteed success.

The other musicians’ origin stories reflect a lifelong love of music and plenty of touring experience. The joy of playing is in their blood and drives them forward, which is why they all harmonized so well with Hook.

Singer Wes Horton was introduced to music at the age of 13 thanks to his sister and Guitar Hero. He honed his vocal skills by playing in local bands and making online videos. Various friends and acquaintances in the music industry became the link between him and Hook. Horton knew he wanted to be a frontman, and Flat Black gave him that opportunity. Wes loves the fact that his bandmates prioritize songwriting – and that allows him to be the singer he always wanted to be.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, bassist Nick Diltz is the son of a legendary rock music photographer who took him to concerts during his formative years. He recalls being inspired by a VHS video of a U2 performance at the legendary Red Rocks venue. Seeing fans in the footage clamoring for a piece of Bono is a vision that has never left him. This first contact with the power of a true rock icon sealed Nick’s destiny as a live performer.

Drummer Rob Pierce hails from Nashville, also known as Music City. His father was a race car driver and his grandfather was a minister. He grew up racing go-karts and initially wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps until he joined the fourth grade band and was bitten by the music bug. He chose the snare drum over the saxophone and from that moment on, music was all that mattered. Rob got his first drum kit at age 11, which he set up in his father’s auto shop. He learned to play his instrument alongside 1,000 horsepower engines, which continues to influence his highly energetic style to this day. The chemistry between the musicians of Flat Black is palpable. And while Flat Black’s songs are designed to simmer in fans’ heads for weeks, the true nature of the band’s material is meant to be experienced live. Flat Black are now ready to hit the road and bring these brutal bangers to the masses live and in the flesh.

Flat Black are:

Jason Hook – guitar
Wes Horton – vocals
