This is the main theme of the game Shadow the Hedgehogand it really packs a punch, as it is one of the darkest and most aggressive songs in the series. That being said, both the song and the game are almost comical, as their extreme “edginess” actually comes across as cheesy to many fans. Despite this, this song is still aggressive and highlights Shadow’s attitude and difficult past.

The song highlights the two sides of Shadow’s personality in the game and the fact that he can be either a hero or a villain depending on the players’ actions. Shadow invites players to “Enter into my secret” since none of the other characters know what he’s been through. Although fans are used to the hard rock sound that Crush 40 brought to the series, “I Am… All Of Me” takes it a step further and may therefore divide some fans.

Interestingly, the vocals even serve to hint at the truth that Maria did not ask to be avenged at all. The repeated phrase “Shadow, don’t make me angry,” is from Maria’s perspective and shows at this point in the game that what Shadow is trying to do is wrong. Fans realize this before Shadow does it himself, and so he erases anything that could hinder his plan by repeatedly “I don’t want to hear you.” This track received a rocking remix for “Episode Shadow” in Sound forces.

“Waking Up” is one of the many ending themes depending on which path players take throughout the story. It is the “Neutral” theme and is similar to “This Machine”, an electro-rock track also sung by Julien-K. It is written from the perspective of a bystander commenting on Shadow, but later switches to first-person.

In his game of the same name, Shadow searches for answers to the mystery of his identity. “Waking Up” tells the story of how Shadow finally finds answers and realizes his true destiny. Shadow also seems to suspect that certain characters have kept him in the dark in order to manipulate him, namely Black Doom and the GUN Commander. Lines like “Those who have answers always get what they want” show that he has recognized this and thus motivate him to break away from his past and “be free.”

3 “Throw everything away”

Shadows Original Theme Song

Shadow and Sonic team up as Super Shadow and Super Sonic in SA2

  • Appears in: Sonic Adventure 2

Shadow debuted in Sonic Adventure 2with a personal theme song like the other playable characters in the game. “Throw It All Away” perfectly captured Shadow’s character at this point in the franchise. He has just been released from GUN’s stasis by Dr. Eggman and is now on a quest to avenge Maria’s death by destroying the world with the Eclipse Cannon. However, as it turns out, this was all a false plan due to manipulated memories from Maria’s grandfather Gerald Robotnik. Thus, Shadow redeems his guilt when he learns what Maria really wants.

With its heavy industrial instrumentation and muffled vocals, this song can be confusing. But it’s actually a clever way of portraying Shadow’s confused and altered memories. As in the song’s title, Shadow is trying to make things right, and instead of continuing to believe Gerald’s lies, he “throws them all away” and tries to fulfill Maria’s request.

It is performed by the band Magna-Fi and shows how Shadow has changed after the painful journey he has been through.
