Worcester Red Sox lose series against Lehigh Valley IronPigs after Sunday’s loss

ALLENTOWN – The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (14-7, 48-46) defeated the Worcester Red Sox (10-10, 45-50) 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park to win the series 2-1.

For the third time in the series, the IronPigs scored first. Cal Stevenson hit a solo home run over the left-field fence in the second inning to give Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead.

Carlos De La Cruz hit a two-run homer in the third inning to extend the IronPigs’ lead to 3-0. Lehigh Valley then scored another run in the fourth inning with an RBI double by Nick Podkul.

The WooSox got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with an RBI double by Vaughn Grissom that scored Mark Contreras, but the IronPigs got that run back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Simon Muzziotti.

Another run was scored for Lehigh Valley in the sixth inning when Kody Clemens hit his second solo home run in as many games, giving the IronPigs a 6-1 lead.

But the WooSox caught up late, scoring two runs in the seventh inning on an error and a walk with the bases loaded, but ultimately left the bases loaded in that inning. They scored a run in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice by Eddy Alvarez, but left two more runs standing in that inning.

Vaughn Grissom played second base in the second game of his rehab assignment. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Grissom played six innings at second base.

WooSox starter Richard Fitts played four innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits while allowing three walks and making one strikeout.

The WooSox have a day off tomorrow before continuing their 10-game road trip against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at PNC Field on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m.
