A 20-year-old Detroit man drowned in Taylor Lake in Rose Township on Saturday morning, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

Marsalis Quintin Carter, a resident of Detroit and Tuskegee, Alabama, was in a pontoon boat on Taylor Lake when he jumped off the side of the boat and did not resurface, police said. At least 25 divers participated in a search that lasted more than 13 hours and discovered the victim’s body early Sunday morning.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard has advised swimmers this summer to pay attention to safety measures while in the water to avoid drowning, he said.

“I advise people who are not strong swimmers to have a flotation device with them when they go into the lake, because there have been numerous drownings in similar situations this summer,” Bouchard said. “Even if you are a strong swimmer and have been drinking alcohol, it’s a good idea.”

Nationwide, more people drown in July than in any other month, and overall the number appears to be on the rise: After decades of decline, there are now more than 4,000 drowning accidents per year, the Detroit Free Press reported.

There have been several drownings in the Detroit metropolitan area this summer, including on July 5 at White Lake and on June 17 at Camp Dearborn.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team was dispatched to the scene at 11:07 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office said. Response teams from the Southeast Michigan Dive Group arrived at the scene and assisted the Sheriff’s Office and North Oakland County Fire Department with the search. The response teams included divers from Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston and Wayne counties.

The search team discovered Carter’s body about 300 feet from shore in 35 feet of water around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office said. An autopsy performed Sunday morning at the Oakland County coroner’s office determined the preliminary cause of death was drowning, according to the sheriff’s office.

Oakland County Sheriff’s air and drone units were also involved in the search, the sheriff’s office said. Because of poor visibility, divers used sonar devices and search techniques, the sheriff’s office said.

The victim was in a group helping a local resident move and they went on the boat to take a break, police said. The boat owner took the group swimming in Taylor Lake and Carter and another man jumped into the water, with Carter not resurfacing, the sheriff’s office said.
