Especially for the HSSR

Greenville – Every Friday night, high school football teams across South Carolina prepare to battle their opponents, and each home team gets ready to take the field by using their “voice” in the press box to hype up the crowd and get ready for the
Christ Church Cavaliers this voice is Ryan Hornish.

In addition to being behind the microphone at Cavaliers football games, Hornish has also been the voice of basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, baseball since 2014, as well as several football banquets, Hall of Fame inductions, and most spring and fall award ceremonies.

Hornish says, “If I’m available and a CCES team needs help, I’m happy to help. It’s been a great time and I can’t wait to see the future Cavalier teams compete.”

I grew up as a sports enthusiast in Texas and played basketball and golf at
Waco Midway High SchoolHe completed the
University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and transferred to Greenville in 1999. His connection with CCE began in 2013 when his two oldest children, Blake (’20) and Meryl (’22), were enrolled. His younger children are Payne (’25) and Mills (’28), who are current Cavaliers.

Hornish’s job as an announcer began casually in 2014 when he began commentating on D-Team games, which featured his eldest son, Blake.

“My wife Angela and some of our friends thought I should do it. Although I had no qualifications, I have a good sense of humor, am quick witted and understand most sports well, so I took on the challenge and had fun doing it,” Hornish said.

The success with the D-Team games was so well received that as a long-time voice of the Cavaliers
Wes Clarke decided to take a new position in the senior class Hornish was the next man, and he will be his 11th year as the voice of the Cavs.

In his 10 years behind the microphone, he has seen some very good athletes and teams as CCE continues to be one of the best sports programs in the state.
HSSR asked Hornish what his favorite moment behind the microphone was, and it was a very recent game.

“I have to say that the last regular season game of 2022 against our rival
Southside Christian. We were playing for our first regional championship since 2014 and SCHS dominated us for most of the game. We were down 10-0 at halftime and were down 13-7 with just over 2 minutes to go and SCHS had the ball 1st and goal at our 4-yard line.

I asked the Cavalier fans. “Do you believe it, I believe it, the game is not over yet. The team forced a field goal that was missed. The offense then ran 97 yards to score with 50 seconds left and with the extra point, the Cavs clinched the regional title 14-13 and then beat
Johnsonville for their first state championship since 2014.”

We also asked him what makes CCE such a special place for its athletes and he replied, “I give credit to our athletic director.
Molly Miller for hiring a team of great coaches across all sports. CCES has been fortunate to have some great athletes in so many different sports over the years, but I attribute our athletic success to the great leadership and coaching that helps these athletes reach their full potential.”

Hornish also emphasized CCE’s core values. CCES is an acronym for Community, Character, Excellence and Service. These principles are embedded in each of our students and athletes and play a key role in our athletic success.

“I consider the entire CCES community to be my extended family. I am honored and blessed that over the years four of my children have attended CCES. I have had the pleasure of watching them succeed and develop personally, academically and athletically both at CCES and beyond. My role as ‘Voice of the Cavs’ is my way of giving back to the CCES community for the role CCES has played in each of their lives,” Hornish said.
