South Korean singer-songwriter 10cm is planning new songs for a full album

SINGAPORE – Indie singer-songwriter 10cm, also known as Kwon Jung-Yeol, will perform in Singapore for the first time tonight (November 18).

10cm debuted in South Korea in 2010 as an indie duo and released their first EP, 10 centimetersto great applause. 10cm won the “This Year’s Discovery Award” at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards and the “Best Pop Song Award” for “Tonight I’m Crazy” at the 2011 Korean Music Awards.

The band’s name referred to the difference in height between the two members. However, in 2017, guitarist Yoon Cheol-jong had to leave the group for personal reasons, while singer Kwon Jung-yeol continued as a one-man band under the name 10cm.

Despite the change in the band structure, Jung-Yeol continued to produce numerous hits such as “My Eyes” from the drama leprechaun and “Lean On Me”, from the hottest show of the year Hotel del LunaThe singer was also very busy this year and released the EP 4.3.

Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore spoke to Jung-Yeol before his concert at the Esplanade Annexe Studio.

How do you like Singapore and what have you done here so far?

Basically, I just want to concentrate on the concert first and then go shopping on Orchard Road (smiles).

Speaking of shopping, I noticed your casual street style. Is there a particular look or favorite brands that you buy?

At the moment it’s more casual and I don’t wear a particular brand. I wear clothes that accentuate my physical charms because I’m not very tall or big.

What song do you constantly get asked to play live but hope to play less often, and why?

I can’t think of a particular song, but if I had to choose one, it would be “Americano.” I’ve been asked to sing that song many times.

You have worked with some well-known artists of your time. What is your favorite project and why?

I actually like working with everyone, but the truth is that I especially like working with Chen from Exo. It’s not a one-time thing; we often work together and get along well as friends. I’ve even invited him to be a guest singer on my performance show before.

So what do you do when you go out together as friends?

Basically, we go out to eat grapefruit (Korean soju) and talk because neither of us are very extroverted people.

Is there a city you like to perform in the most?

Singapore.

Is there a ritual before you go on stage?

Always go out with a very relaxed attitude. No stress! (laughs)

What makes your songs so universally appealing to fans?

What sets my music apart from other artists is that my music speaks better to listeners.

When writing a song, what comes first: the melody or the lyrics?

The melody. I usually work in my studio, but sometimes when I’m looking for inspiration it can just be outside, sitting on the bus or eating something. So it’s not a specific place.

What have you learned about yourself and your performance over the years?

When I started singing, I wanted to write about how I feel, about my emotions and things like that. Now that I’ve done that, I want to write songs for people, for my fans, the audience, to give them something to enjoy.

Do you think your fans want more love songs?

As much as they like love songs, they also like songs that they can relate to on a personal level, like “Help.” For other reasons, there are fans who also like songs about money or coffee, like “Americano.”

Do you think your role as an artist will evolve in the future?

When I was younger, I always thought I needed to have a goal, something to work towards. But now that’s not the case anymore. For me, the important thing right now is that I consistently work hard and push myself.

The holiday season is just around the corner. How will you spend the holidays?

I will most likely spend the end of the year with my fans as I will be working and performing.

In six weeks the year 2020 begins. Are you practicing making New Year’s resolutions?

My New Year’s resolution is to release not just a single, but a whole new album. I have a few songs finished at the moment, but I feel like I should write more.
