Watch Post Malone’s debut of new country song “Yours”

Country songs about Fathers watching their daughters get married and, as Hank Hill once put it, “feeling emotions” have become a mini-genre, from Heartland’s “I Loved Her First” to Alan Jackson’s “You’ll Always Be My Baby.” Country newcomer Post Malone is the latest addition to this micro-canon this week, premiering “Yours,” a song from his new album F-1 billionwhich is released on August 16, at his Bud Light-sponsored appearance on Tuesday night at Marathon Music Works in Nashville.

In his introduction, Malone acknowledged that he might be going out on a limb: “I wrote this song about my daughter’s wedding,” he said. “I have a two-year-old and we’ve got plenty of time.” The ballad is easily the most sentimental (some would say cheesy) of his career to date, and Malone devotes the entire song to his daughter’s future husband.

After a steel guitar intro, Malone sings: “It’s gonna break my heart when she gives you hers… She may be your better half, but she’s my everything/ We’ll both love her forever/ But I loved her long before that/ Someday, I know, I’ll give her away/ Buddy, that don’t mean she’s yours.”

Elsewhere in the show, Malone sang a duet with Blake Shelton on their single “Pour Me a Drink,” joined Sierra Ferrell for a cover of Johnny Cash and June Carter’s “Jackson,” and performed another track with Hardy from his upcoming album, “Would You Hide My Gun.” In addition to “Pour Me a Drink,” F-1 billion previously spawned the hit “I Had Some Help,” a duet with Morgan Wallen. Malone will tour the album starting September 8.
