Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a message of “love and gratitude” to President Joe Biden on Sunday after he announced that he would not seek re-election in this year’s presidential election.

Biden has been facing growing pressure for weeks from within his own party and from major Democratic donors to step down in the interests of his party’s future following his disastrous performance in the debate against Donald Trump in late June. On Sunday afternoon, he announced that he was withdrawing from his re-election bid.

In response to Biden’s announcement, in which he also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee, Pelosi released a statement expressing her “love and gratitude” for the president.

“With love and gratitude to President Biden for always believing in the promise of America and giving people the opportunity to find fulfillment. God has blessed America with Joe Biden’s greatness and goodness,” Pelosi said, according to MSNBC columnist Eric Michael Garcia, who shared the statement on X, formerly Twitter.

This message comes after Biden appeared to be fighting behind the scenes against a campaign led by Pelosi to abandon his re-election.

CNN reported Thursday that Pelosi told Biden in private conversations that she was concerned that current polls suggested he could not win this year’s election. However, none of the sources cited in the report said whether the California congresswoman had specifically said the president should not run for a second term.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information becomes available.
