With his excellent improvisational skills, he is a highly sought-after bandleader and frequently appears as a guest with many of Toronto’s finest musicians and ensembles.
In addition to leading her own quartet, Perlman frequently works with well-known artists and ensembles such as Adrean Farrugia, the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, and Chuck Jackson’s Big Bad Blues Band.
She led two albums with The Vipers and has appeared on recordings by the Toronto Jazz Orchestra and Brandi Disterheft, among others.
“A highlight of her career,” the press release states, “was her collaboration with The Vipers, whose 2011 release received frequent play on JazzFM and CBC.”

Perlman won a JUNO Award for Best Traditional Jazz
Album with Brandi Disterheft’s debut album and received a JUNO nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for her work on Adrean Farrugia’s Ricochet.
His other notable recordings include performances with the Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra and the Toronto Jazz Orchestra.
In addition to her role as a voice teacher at Mohawk College, Perlman has made significant contributions to the Canadian Children’s Opera Company’s OPERAtion KIDS program. She has taught nearly
2,000 elementary school students, fostering their love of music and opera and showcasing her tireless commitment to music education and the transformative power of community through music.
In addition to his teaching, Perlman is a prolific artist and recording artist, touring extensively throughout Canada and with a discography that includes the album Alive at Musideum, a collaboration with pianist Adrean Farrugia, and recordings with various jazz ensembles.

“As a dedicated community artist, Sophia embodies her belief in the accessibility of music for all and continually inspires others through her roles as a musician, songwriter, arts educator and music director,” the press release states.
Today she lives in Hornepayne in Northern Ontario and continues to be an active contributor to Canada’s dynamic music scene.
