Former Michigan DB and Belleville High star dead after tragedy in Utah

A former member of the University of Michigan football team and star at nearby Belleville High School drowned in Utah on Saturday after a nosedive into the United States.

Andre Seldon Jr., who played for the Wolverines in 2020 and 2021, was found dead by a dive team shortly after 9 p.m. local time, according to a late-night statement from Utah State University.

Officials with the Cache County Sheriff’s Office in Utah say Seldon, who transferred to Utah State University for the 2024 season, was last seen cliff diving at the nearby Porcupine Reservoir on Saturday afternoon and never resurfaced. The reservoir is about 20 miles south of the school’s campus in Logan.

“Our football program is deeply saddened to experience the loss of one of our members,” Utah State interim coach Nate Dreiling said in the statement released by the school. “Having previously shared a relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you that he was an incredible person and teammate.”

“Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we mourn with them this tremendous loss.”

Seldon, 22, played the 2022 and 2023 seasons at New Mexico State. He transferred to Texas Christian in the spring but re-enrolled in April to play at Utah State in the fall.

The former defensive back played in two games for Michigan, which he committed to after high school. Seldon was a star at nearby Belleville High School, where he was a three-year starter on the football team, ran track and field, and left school as a four-star prospect according to various recruiting services.

Seldon, who played above his 5-foot-8 and 175-pound height, was a member of MLive’s Dream Team on defense and participated in the 2019 Under Armour All-American Game.

As recently as Friday, he was active on social media, posting a screenshot of his image – in a Utah State uniform – in EA Sports’ new College Football ’25 video game.

“Our Utah State University athletic family is devastated by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” said Diana Sabau, USU athletic director. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates and everyone who loved Andre.”
