Birmingham City transfer ‘in the works’ as Chris Davies targets fifth summer signing

Hearts boss Steven Naismith has confirmed that a move for Alex Cochrane to Birmingham City is “in the works” after the Scottish club accepted an offer at the weekend.

The left-back has been given permission to travel to England and complete his move to the Blues. Cochrane has spent the last three seasons at Hearts, making 96 appearances in the Scottish Premiership and a further 30 appearances in various cup competitions.

The Blues are currently in the market for a left-back and 24-year-old Cochrane looks to be their man. Manny Longelo is expected to leave the Blues this summer, 18 months after joining on permanent loan from West Ham United.

Of Cochrane’s impending transfer, Naismith told The Herald: “It’s in the works. He’s speaking to them and I expect the medical and legal side of things will be sorted out in the next few days.”

“All in all, it’s a sensible decision for the football business. I think every club in Scotland is in that category: if good offers come in for the players, they have to be considered.

“I think it’s a good model. We as a club haven’t been good enough at it in recent years, but Alex was someone you recognised, he came in, he improved, he improved Hearts and this is the result of that. It’s a good deal for everyone.”

If Cochrane actually completes his move, he would be the Blues’ fifth summer signing after Ryan Allsop, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Alfie May and Emil Hansson.
