Disney cast members in California approve strike in annual collective bargaining negotiations

Workers at Disneyland California have given the green light to a possible strike if their demands are not met, according to the four unions that represent the nearly 14,000 employees at the Anaheim theme park.

Their vote, which represents an overwhelming 99% of union members, only entitles them to strike if they fail to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement with Disney. Negotiations will begin Monday, The Orange County Register reports.

The four unions represent a wide range of workers, from ride operators to janitors at the Happiest Place on Earth.

The unions’ demands include higher wages and disciplinary action related to the nearly 700 employees who wore union badges in support of the wage campaign, Inside the Magic reported.

The allegations are currently being investigated by the National Labor Relations Board.

“At the rally (on Wednesday), we continue to focus on the well-being of our guests and employees,” Disneyland officials told the Orange County Register.

“We remain committed to our upcoming meetings on July 22 and 23 to reach an agreement with Master Services that focuses on what matters most to Cast Members, positions the Disneyland Resort for growth and job creation, and allows us to continue to deliver incredible experiences to our guests.”

Disneyland employees’ employment contracts expired on June 16, but Downtown Disney and California Adventure Park’s contracts do not expire until September 30.

Talks with Disneyland about the employees’ demands first began in April of this year.

“A strike authorization is not unusual as part of the bargaining process and does not mean that a strike is imminent or already underway. The Disneyland Resort remains open and ready to welcome guests,” says an FAQ on union negotiations at Disneyland obtained by the Orange County Register.
