The attack on Yemen was not unanimously approved by the Cabinet – Israel News

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Justice Minister Yariv Levin refused to take part in the cabinet vote on the attack on Yemen on Saturday, saying they had insufficient information about the impending operation. The vote was therefore not unanimous.

Smotrich said he did not take part in the vote on the issue because the information about the authorization of the operation was only sent to the Cabinet after the decision was made. Smotrich’s office issued a statement saying: “Israel must continue to attack with all its might, even in distant areas. The attacks on Yemen are a good action by the Israeli forces, which I support, although more is possible and necessary.”

“I asked not to be allowed to vote because the Cabinet was not given enough details about the operation and the details we received came late. The matter was put to vote after the people at the top had made their decision. Therefore, the vote was just a ‘rubber stamp’ and I decided not to vote,” the finance minister said.

“However, I trust the Prime Minister’s decision,” the Finance Minister added.

KAN reported that the attack plan was approved during a four-hour meeting of the political-security cabinet and that the Israeli warplanes had already left for their target before the end of the meeting.

To prevent leaks before the attack was carried out, Cabinet ministers received personal summons from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military secretary, KAN added.

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Saturday that Israel had carried out attacks on Yemen. The Houthis reported explosions in Hodeidah in western Yemen in response to the Houthis’ drone attack on Tel Aviv on Friday that killed 50-year-old Yevgeny Perder and wounded eight others.

Cabinet meeting lasted four hours

The IDF spokesman said: “In response to the hundreds of attacks on the State of Israel in recent months, warplanes recently attacked military targets of the Houthi terror regime in the port area of Hodeidah in Yemen.”

The discussion to approve the operational plans took place on Saturday morning under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Gallant together with Chief of Staff Major General Herzi Halevi, Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar, Head of the Operations Department Major General Oded Basyuk, Chief of the Defense Staff Major General Aharon Haliva and Chief of the Strategy Department Major General Eliezer Toledano.
